Indigenous Governance

In our efforts to not only talk about, but also to embody our indigenous values, cosmovisions, and spiritualities, the center created a horizontal leadership model based on indigenous governance principles.

This model is the center’s inter-tribal, intergenerational collective, currently comprised of six Indigenous elders, adults and youth, including traditional healers, spiritual leaders, artists, and cultural knowledge bearers, representing tribes and nations throughout Turtle Island (continent of America) and Africa. The collective shares the responsibility to govern, lead, design, and operate the organization and all of its projects.

In terms of the larger community, at any given time, the IHC collective engages with individuals and families throughout multiple counties in Northern California and Guatemala, as our collective members are actively involved in ceremonies, community organizing, gatherings, and advocacy for indigenous families, all around indigenous health and wellness, spirituality and cultural revitalization.

This collective is also guided, advised, and protected by trusted Indigenous spiritual leaders in the United States and Guatemala, and is mentored and supported by Indigenous experts and non-Native allies throughout the United States.
